✍️ THE ANALYSIS
Valentine's Day at Oakwell. Nothing says romance like watching two mid-table sides who can't defend properly have a go at each other on a freezing February afternoon. If you're bringing your other half to this one, they either genuinely love you or they've given up trying to change you.
Right, let's have a look at what we're dealing with. AFC Wimbledon rock up with a points-per-game record of 1.31, which is almost identical to our 1.37. Almost impressive, that. Two teams separated by the width of a Rizla, scrapping over bragging rights neither set of fans will remember come March. The stats don't make for pretty reading either. We're leaking 1.70 goals a game while only managing 1.63 at the other end, which is the footballing equivalent of trying to fill a bath with the plug out. Wimbledon aren't much better, mind. They score even less than we do, which takes some doing.
The head-to-head record is perfectly balanced, as all things shouldn't be when you're desperate for three points. One win each, one draw, across three meetings. It's like the universe looked at these two clubs and decided "you know what, let's just make this as frustrating as possible for everyone involved". Two bald men fighting over a comb springs to mind, except the comb's probably broken and neither of them particularly wanted it in the first place.
Our recent form reads DLWDL, which is about as consistent as a broken clock. At least a broken clock is right twice a day. We can't seem to string together back-to-back wins, and our defence has all the structural integrity of a wet paper bag. The prediction merchants reckon we'll nick it 2-1 with 71% confidence, presumably because we're at home and Oakwell can be a proper fortress when the lads remember they're supposed to be defending it.
The sensible part of my brain says we've got enough at home to edge this, just about. The part that's watched us all season knows that 2-2 feels inevitable, probably after we've led twice and defended like strangers at a bus stop. But sod it, I'll take the optimistic punt. 2-1 Barnsley, with at least one goal conceded from a set piece we should've dealt with three passes earlier.
🎯 PREDICTION
Key Factors:
- Home advantage at Oakwell
- Barnsley averaging 1.4 PPG
