✍️ THE ANALYSIS

Right, so Saturday takes us down to Reading for what promises to be about as thrilling as watching paint dry in a magnolia corridor. Two sides flirting with mediocrity, both perfectly capable of nicking a win or shooting themselves in the foot. It's the kind of fixture that has 1-1 written all over it before a ball's even kicked, which naturally means we'll find some inventive way to make it painful.

The numbers tell you everything you need to know about where we're at. We're averaging 1.45 points per game, they're on 1.40. We score 1.59, concede 1.55. They're slightly tighter at the back (1.24 conceded) but less threatening going forward (1.32 scored). It's all very even, very beige, very League One in January. Two bald men fighting over a comb, as they say.

Our recent form of LLLDW suggests we've finally remembered how to win a football match, though let's not get carried away after one victory. The memory banks have been mercifully purged of the specifics, which is probably for the best. When your highlight reel needs witness protection, it's best not to dwell.

History isn't exactly on our side either. Twenty-six meetings, and we've managed just six wins to their eleven. Nine draws rounds it off nicely, because of course it does. We average 2.6 goals per game in this fixture, which at least suggests someone usually bothers to turn up and have a go.

The Madejski isn't exactly a fortress these days, but it's still an away trip, and we all know how those tend to go. Reading are higher in the table, though not by enough to suggest they're anything special. They're just slightly less rubbish than us at the moment, which in this division counts as a tactical advantage.

The gaffer will need the lads switched on from the off because this has bore draw written through it like a stick of Blackpool rock. Both sides capable of nicking it, neither likely to run away with it. We'll probably create half a chance, they'll do the same, someone will make a hash of defending a set piece, and we'll all trudge home wondering why we invested two hours in that.

1-1 feels inevitable. Perhaps even generous.
