It seems like Keith Hill is on a serious mission. He pledged to bring solidarity to the team that finished 17th last season. Who would have thought after losing Shackell, The Reds would bounce back with compelling ambitions? The juggernaut rolls on, as controversy laden ex-Manchester City striker/winger Kelvin Etuhu was given second-life to redeem himself by the manager, who had previous association with him during his spell at Rochdale, however, the deal has not been struck yet.
The deal has hit a snag due to medical concerns, though Hill insists it could still happen. Although he had a medical at Oakwell, Sky Sports understands that 'the move has stalled; Tykes are seeking medical advice over the results.'
The manager vented his frustration- "He's a player I admire, but at the moment the deal is ongoing because there are still things we need to look at. Nothing’s going to happen now anyway because we're off to Spain next week for our training camp, so that's where things are at the moment."
Leaving aside the controversy, Etuhu would have lifted the damped spirits at Oakwell. He is 23, energetic, versatile, premier league material, big match player, goal scorer- Perfect for Barnsley. It's natural the gaffer is upset- "He's a good lad, but I'm not sure whether we're going to be able to sign him at this stage."
However there is no doubt about Hill's seventh signing of the season, Rob Edwards. The former Villa man, who also played a major role in Blackpool's promotion season, has penned a two year deal with the Reds. Now the Reds have Miles Addison in their armoury too, Shackell's void has been well covered up. Barnsley looks to reap the benefit of Rob's experience and pedigree, as evident in Hill's voice- "He’s a recognised centre-back and has plenty of experience; he’s going to be a very important player for us.”
What more important now, is to make sure that new recruits gel with the team easily. A brave move from the manager, and a smart one too, that he hasn't wasted any time in spotting the holes and cementing it. Hill has removed the lid of 'crude pessimism' around the club, changed the mood around with an air of optimism and exuding confidence.
